Snow and some pre growing

Late March goes out like a lion. Yesterday ground was covered in snow again. Well, a small setback in weather did not matter at all. At least if you had studded winter tyres. Luckily I had-Hakkapeliitta 8's have never let me down.

Just few days ago our garden was basking in sunny spring weather and yet again it got covered in snow.

But I don't mind. I'm sure that spring is almost here. This was a good timing for pre-growing. I took plastic plant containers, soil and seeds. Then quickly read through which seeds can be pre-grown in advance.

Luckily I had some assistance from my little helper who dropped seeds to soil and helped with watering.

Seeds organised and ready for the season.

I bought some kale seeds from Plantagen. In addition I found some extra kale seeds, which I had totally forgotten. Well, this year we will have kale smoothies and kale everywhere ;)

I also found some lavender and green asparagus seeds, which I intend to plant later.

Seeds in small plastic plant containers. These containers have lavender and kale seeds.

How about you? Do you have some specific gardening rituals or maybe tips?

Let's see how the project continues. 'Til then, have a good week!

Minecraft garden - Kitchen garden plans for the following summer

In the previous post I told about my itchy green thumb.  I could not help myself and made new arrangements or  to be more precise new plans changes will be executed this or the following year. Our garden looks like this at the moment.

GARDEN NOW (MINECRAFT VERSION 1.0 -as my other half described it :)

Wooden garden bed needs some updating. That's why our future plan has new, raised garden beds. At the moment we are not quite sure what the material would be. We also decided to divide one large bed to three smaller beds. This helps garden to stay more organised.

GARDEN LATER

Strawberries are moving to my parents. They need so much space and this is the best choice. First garden bed would contain vegetables and root vegetables such as asparagus, black salsify and fennel. Second and third raised garden bed will first have tulips (for example Queen of the Night) and later in the summer flowering eatable summer flowers. Fourth one would have herbs and chilis (Aji Cristal/ Rawit and Habanero). Perhaps kale would also find it’s way here.

I'm also planning to make cold frames from old, single-glazed window frames. This would extend the harvest time beyond the confines of the growing season.

But ideas are still thrown in the air so plans are not ready yet. Let's see what will happen..

Have a great weekend!
Next post about pre-grown vegetables :)
PS: I found kale seeds, whoopi

Green thumb growing

I apologize delays in blog posts. I have been busy during last few weeks and in addition I caught a nasty spring cold. But now I'm back and anxious to blog some more : )

The warmer weather gets, more itchy my and family's green thumb becomes. We have snow white Herbie Indoor Garden which is both stylish and practical. It circulates water with an efficient and silent pump. We bought it from Stockmann departments store few years ago and it has been really good. A month ago I thought that the pump was broken because of some noise. Soon realised that it just needed a good cleansing. We rinsed pump with running water and checked that there is no soil left. After that it was as good as new. Lamp is well hidden and still effective growing lamp. Demonstrative picture under.

We have made some plans for the following summer and have bought both plant and flower seeds. Since we have neighbours with small kids we decided to have eatable flowers. Plus eatable flowers are easy to use in decorating dish and adding some colour in ice cubes.

From far left cornflower (Centaurea cyanus fl.pl. Pinkie), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare vardulce), marigold (Tagetes tenuifolia ), marjoram (Origanum majorana), black salsify (Scorzonera hispanica), kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea) and Lavatera trimestris mix. Notice the Latin names for exact plants and flowers.

We have previously had black salsify and therefore wanted it to our kitchen garden. It was just not  possible to harvest on first year (actually I thought that plants did not survive). Next year I was surprised about these root vegetables with whitish colour.  Shortly I realised that I had managed to grow black salsify and prepared a creamy soup. This year (or next) I intend to prepare black salsify such as white asparagus, aside salmon and home-made hollandaise.

I'm also in a hunt for kale/borecole seeds. Let's see if I'll find some. Two years ago I had kale (Brassica oleracea Acephala Group) in garden and I have to say that it was really humble  with soil. It also has really good nutritional value. Hopefully there will be some left.

Next coming some garden updates... Have a great week!
